About WBTC

Since 1983 West Berkshire Training Consortium has been providing high quality apprenticeships and training to organisations and young people across West Berkshire and beyond. We have trained over 15,000 apprentices in a wide range of occupations from accounting to warehousing. Learners and employers benefit from our personable, tailored approach and one-to-one support, resulting in high achievement and progression rates.

Board of Directors

WBTC has a strong and active Board of Directors/Trustees made up of dedicated, experienced individuals.

This allows WBTC to lead the way in creating opportunities and expanding capabilities in local businesses as well as helping individuals start and develop their careers.

MATT GARVEY – Managing Director

Matt joined WBTC in 2000 and has over 17 years of experience in further education and work-based training. Matt is passionate about providing first-class, innovative and value-added services to all apprentices and employers.


Anthony is the Principal of Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) and his passion and vision are to provide an outstanding learning experience for all its learners to drive economic growth and prosperity in the region. Anthony also serves as a Governor for Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, representing North Hampshire and West Berkshire.


Richard has nearly 40 years’ experience in the world of nuclear safety and engineering in various roles including Main Board Director. He believes that individuals’ contributions and personal development are a prime factor to organisational success. Richard is a keen walker and sailor and has tackled some of the most challenging mountains and oceans.

IAIN COX – Director

Iain joined the WBTC board in 2014. He worked for the Royal Berkshire Fire & Rescue Service for 35 years and was the Chief Fire Officer 2003 to 2013. Iain currently chairs three national networks and councils covering fire and sprinkler issues and is a volunteer with the local Cats Protection branch and the RNLI.


Sally joined the WBTC board in 2014 and has over 27 years of human resources experience from both Berkshire County Council and West Berkshire Council. Sally is also a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development. She is an avid reader and writer of fiction, having published short stories and two novels.


Anne joined the WBTC board in 2017 bringing over 40 years of experience in both the private and public sectors. Anne also led the highly successful WBTC apprenticeship programme in her previous role as HR Project Manager at James Cowper Kreston.


Steve joined the WBTC board in 2018. Now retired, Steve spent the last 32 years of his career working in various roles at AWE, culminating in the role of Infrastructure Director. Steve is Trustee Director of a large pension fund, a Trustee of The Loddon School and the Vice Chair of Governors at Basingstoke College of Technology.


Nicola joined the WBTC board in 2019 and works for Bayer Plc as Head of Business Services within the healthcare sector and is responsible for the operational activities for UK and Ireland. Nicola is also an Enterprise Adviser for the Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). She has worked closely with WBTC since 2013 and is the apprentice ambassador across the business championing early career opportunities in business administration and customer service.
