Sydney Sova

Sydney Sova joined WBTC as a learner initially on the Foundation Learning programme. She was always an ambitious and hardworking person so we are all delighted that she is now an Veterinary Care Apprentice with Vet4Pets. This is Syd’s story an inspiration for any young person.

What got you started on the road to an Apprenticeship?
I’d left school with hardly any GCSE’s and was really struggling to get a job so Connexions Newbury told me about West Berkshire Training Consortium and how they may be able to help. When I started with WBTC I was nervous at first but found everyone really welcoming and the options of what I could do, was a little shocking as I wasn’t expecting such a bewildering amount of opportunities to be available.

How did WBTC help you?
Everyone at WBTC was really supportive in helping me towards a veterinary career. It was really hard at first as we couldn’t find anywhere to take me on for work experience but WBTC kept looking and looking and wouldn’t let me give up until I found somewhere. Eventually we secured a supportive employer. I was excited to start my placement as I had never done anything before. The experience I gained was amazing and mainly I got to work with what I love best - the animals.

Has your Apprenticeship been beneficial to your future?
Yes!!! I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t got the extra qualifications. I am in a Veterinary Nursing Apprenticeship with a good quality, well known veterinary franchise. In the Workplace I am getting loads of hands-on experience and since September I have been attending college, this is giving me 'paper experience' and supports everything I am doing at work perfectly. I love my job and couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else.

Would recommend WBTC and Apprenticeships to other young people?
Definitely! Like I said, I wouldn’t be where I am today without you guys! And I couldn’t be more grateful for everything you’ve done for me.
