Thanks to WBTC, Shannon Stevenson has found a career she enjoys. With a varied and interesting role at the Thatcham Children's Centre, she has acquired new skills, gained valuable work experience and achieved her Level 2 qualification. We asked her a little about how she got her start and what her future plans are.

What is your current position?
I work with the administration team.

Who is your employer?
West Berkshire Council

How long have you been with your employer?
I have now been with my employer for a year.

Describe your job. What do you do on a day to day basis?
I am in charge of the finance side of the business, ensuring PO's are raised, checking room hires and bookings. I am also currently helping with what I did in my Apprenticeship which was being on reception and the other sides of admin such as answering the telephone, talking to people, making room bookings etc.

What Apprenticeship programme are you on and what is the qualification you are going towards or have already achieved?
I was doing an Intermediate Apprenticeship to achieve my Level 2 in Business and Administration, which I have now achieved so I am now going to start my Level 3.

How long were you on the programme?
I was on the programme for 1 year.

Have you been promoted at all as a result of your Apprenticeship training?
Yes, after my Apprenticeship I was offered a full-time position as part of the administration team.

What got you started on the road to an Apprenticeship?
I knew that when I finished school I wanted to do an Apprenticeship, I went to a group interview at WBTC and afterwards got invited to a few interviews. That's when I got offered the job here at Thatcham Children’s Centre.

How has an Apprenticeship helped you?
The Apprenticeship has helped me grow in confidence I never thought I would have at my age. I have learnt so many new skills, which I will be able to use for the rest of my working career. I feel that by doing the Apprenticeship I now have more experience than a lot of other people my age and feel that I will progress as time goes on.

Where is your future, or how do you see your career taking shape?
I see my future here at the Children’s Centre, I would like to improve my skills further, so I will be doing a Level 3 in Business and Administration. I would also like to become a manager in a business environment or becoming something like a PA.

How did WBTC help you?
WBTC was brilliant throughout my whole Apprenticeship, they make made sure I was enjoying what I was doing and gave me all the support and help I needed. Before I did my Apprenticeship I had always struggled with maths, but now with the help of WBTC I got my Level 2. My trainer was also fantastic and encouraging. Everyone at WBTC makes you feel welcoming.

Would you recommend Apprenticeships to others?
Definitely! I feel that it is a great way to start your future.
