Employer Placements

Great Start, Traineeships and Employer Placements

At WBTC all our Great Start learners have the opportunity to get ready for an Apprenticeship and continue their further education. We have a wide range of work based learning opportunities, and on Great Start this can be a work based learning placement with an employer or a Traineeship that will benefit the learner with vocational skills alongside continued study. Unlike an Apprenticeship these are not employed placements but they are designed to help the learner into work. Some of our learners will be entitled to an allowance or bursary while on a Great Start programme.  For those aged 16 - 18 already in work but not getting any training, we can work with an Employer to add training into the job. This part-time Great Start also ensures the employer and young person meet the legal requirement to continue in education until 18 years old. Time with a local employer can help to develop skills, personality and confidence and to meet the varied needs of our learners.  We offer the following options:

A Traineeship lasts for a maximum of 6 months with 1 month of up-front employability training. It is designed for those who are nearly ready to progress onto an  Apprenticeship or job. A Traineeship is ideal as a stepping stone into an Apprenticeship and for those who have already done well in previous forms of learning.

Great Start
A Great Start work based Learning placement is longer term. It’s intended to help the learner move into employment with training or an Apprenticeship. Great Start will usually be for up to 12 months in which time the learner is gaining practical skills in a vocational area that interests them. This is accompanied by qualifications and training from WBTC to compliment the employer activity.

Short-term Placements
For those who are less certain or ready to enter the world of work we can arrange shorter placements with local employers. This helps the learner try out different types of work to see which one best suits their needs.

There is no substitute for real life experience and quality time spent with an employer and it looks really good on a CV. Great Start is ‘a great opportunity’ to prepare for a career. All our learners have on going information, advice and guidance and we gear the Great Start to the needs of the young person.
